STEPHENVILLE, Texas — A strong winter system is expected to move across Texas beginning Friday, bringing much colder temperatures and the potential for icy travel conditions in parts of the state, including Erath County.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Erath County from noon Friday, Jan. 23, through noon Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026. Forecasters say showers are expected Friday, with temperatures falling into the 30s by late afternoon. Rain could then transition to freezing rain and sleet Friday night, with wintry precipitation potentially continuing through Saturday night.
An Extreme Cold Watch is also in effect from 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, through noon Monday, Jan. 26, as dangerously cold temperatures move in behind the system.
Even small amounts of ice can create hazardous travel—especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated roads. Exact impacts will depend on how temperatures and precipitation line up, so residents should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. (A watch means significant winter weather is possible and forecasts may be updated as confidence increases.)
Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, friends and family, and to make sure households have needed medications, bottled water and essential supplies in case of travel disruptions or power outages.
