STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Laurel Glen at Stephenville Assisted Living and Memory Care has installed ceiling-mounted “smart lamp” fixtures that use artificial intelligence to detect resident falls and automatically alert staff, according to Sagora Senior Living, the community’s management company.

Falls are a major health concern for older adults nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older, and more than 14 million — about 1 in 4 — older adults report falling each year.

Sagora said the new system replaces traditional pendant or wrist-worn alert devices that require residents to remember to wear a button and press it after an emergency. Instead, the company said the Nobi smart lamps use AI-enabled sensors to identify a fall and notify caregivers without resident action.

Nobi describes its technology as a ceiling-mounted light that can detect falls and provide rapid alerts, while also tracking patterns such as sleep and daily activity to support care planning. The company reports an average 55% reduction in falls in communities using its system and an average intervention time of about four minutes, noting that results can vary.

Sagora said response time at communities using the lamps has dropped from an average of 57 minutes to about two minutes. Terri Larmer, Sagora’s divisional director of sales and marketing, said the approach is designed to remove barriers for residents: “no wearables, no buttons,” she said.

Nobi also markets privacy controls for the system, saying residents can choose whether fall alerts include no image, an anonymized stick-figure image, or a full image, and that computing is handled on the device with images not sent to the cloud unless a fall is detected.

Laurel Glen at Stephenville is located at 2305 West Lingleville Road and can be reached at (254) 968-5229, according to the community’s website. Sagora, which is based in Fort Worth, says it operates more than 90 senior living communities nationwide.
